The SmilingOne Foundation
URGENT PLEDGE
S O S

Karina Andersen, Founder of The SmilingOne Foundation is asking for your help: "We urgently need your help. I have paid most of the SmilingOne projects out of my own pocket (bridged funding) and now my coffers are empty! So many people rely on our programmes. Need URGENT donations to keep us going for the next couple of months (until one of our big long-term funding proposals come through). Can you help?”

UNLOCKING POTENTIAL...
Since January 2008 the SmilingOne People and Community Building Programmes have been echoing their impact in South African Prisons, Townships and throughout the Western Cape. The SmilingOne Team of Guides (Responsibility Coaches™) inspire change and responsible living by availing themselves as Students and Explorers of Life and inviting their programme participants to explore/learn alongside them… unlocking potential!

NATURAL EXPANSION – BOTH A GIFT AND A CHALLENGE
The seed that was planted in their first community initiative in Brandvlei Maximum Prison in January 2008 has grown to 7 prisons, 120 inmate graduates, 22 inmate coach students and several hundred inmates active in the process. It has received special recognition and given The SmilingOne Foundation access/clearance to all 42 prisons in the Western Cape. It is being broadcasted twice a week via Basic Radio reaching 2,000 inmates. It has taken them beyond the prison walls and since beginning of 2010 the foundation assist re-integration, youth and community development with up to 100 youth and young adults in their personal valuebased leadership program THE RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUAL.

The beauty of this process is that it grows naturally – seeds carried by those who walk this change. The challenge: to follow the expansion the foundation do need substantial funding to cover project costs.
“This is an amazing opportunity to invite in a lot of helping hands, says SmilingOne Founder Karina Andersen. “Our Initiative is not meant to be carried by a few – it is meant for us all!”

TODAY I SAY NO TO DRUGS AND NO TO CRIME!
An amazing success story. A former inmate of Goodwood Medium Prison, called SmilingOne Founder last week. He had attended SmilingOne classes inside prison for just over a year and was released in September 2010. He called to express his gratitude. He had managed to stay away from drugs (he was a heroin addict for years) and to turn his back on crime. He is doing great, he has a job and he shares that it was his journey with SmilingOne that equipped him to choose a different life. He now wants to get involved in SmilingOne’s Youth Initiative in the Nyanga Township – inspiring youth to say no to drugs and no to crime!

About The SmilingOne Foundation
BACKGROUND:
The SmilingOne Foundation has existed as a voluntary initiative since January 2008. Due to the huge success of the initiative a trust was founded in December 2009 and the foundation become registered as a non-profit organisation on June 14th 2010 – enabling the foundation to raise funds. Registration number 080-470 NPO

OUR MISSION
We inspire personal valuebased leadership... We go to the people, we live with them, we love them, we learn from them, we start with what they have and build on what they know. When the task is accomplished and the work is done, the people will remark: We have done it ourselves.

OUR OBJECTIVE:
We activate and implement CIRCLES OF CHANGE in South African disadvantaged communities such as prisons, townships, schools... etc. using the platform of THE RESPONSIBLE INDIVIDUAL – a personal valuebased leadership programme.

a) We educate Entrepreneurs, building teams of Responsibility Coaches™ and Youth Community Builders. We equip them to take part in establishing platforms of responsibility within their own community involving youth, families and schools. Each person involved will from there build on an awareness that will inspire others to walk their path responsibly.

b) We assist Re-Integration, helping ex-offenders and parolees to build the bridge back into society, back home into their communities. We offer support and inspire them to activate CIRCLES OF CHANGE within their own communities – for a crime free and caring community.

c) We are an empowerment arm for our entrepreneurs and their communities. We are not doing it for them; we are doing it with them. ”Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”

d) We strongly believe in sustainability and that everything brought to a community must be able to stay and be nurtured within the community for continuous learning and growth / expansion. Within a two-year programme the platform is established and the community has all tools to sustain it. The CIRCLE OF CHANGE is owned by the community. We continue to walk in partnership!
